The difference between silo and storage tanks

Definition and use differences

Although silos and storage tanks are both storage equipment, their uses are very different. Silo are mainly used to store bulk materials, such as common grains, cement, coal and other granular or powdered things. The grain harvested by farmers and the cement raw materials used in factories must be preserved by it. Storage tanks are even more versatile, and can store both liquids and gases. For example, raw materials in chemical plants and gasoline in gas stations all rely on them for storage.

Comparison of structural features

Silo look like a large cylinder, and usually stand upright with a conical “small hat” underneath so that materials can slide down. The construction materials are also very particular, either reinforced concrete or steel structure, which is particularly strong. There are many types of storage tanks, some standing and some lying. Tanks for storing liquids are usually cylindrical, and those for storing gases have to add a “safety helmet” – a special sealing structure.

Differences in functional characteristics

Let’s talk about silo first. The most feared thing about these things is that the things inside get damp. Think about it, food and feed, these things, are doomed once they get damp, and mold and deterioration are trivial matters, and serious ones are directly scrapped. Therefore, designers equip silos with a ventilation system, just like a human nose, which can breathe and exchange air. There is also temperature monitoring, just like taking body temperature, keeping an eye on the temperature changes inside at any time.

The difference between silo and storage tanks

Storage tanks are really a must-have, especially when it comes to flammable and explosive chemicals and oils. They must be watertight and airtight. For safety reasons, engineers have equipped them with various “bodyguards”: safety valves are ready to release pressure at any time, and explosion-proof devices are always on guard against accidents. The entire tank is like a guard wearing a full set of protective clothing, locking the danger inside.

To put it bluntly, the silo is about “breathing”, and the storage tank is about “iron wall”, each doing its own job.
