Installation process of cone bottom silo

What is a cone bottom silo

The cone bottom silo is a vertical storage device widely used in grain, building materials, chemical and other industries. Its conical bottom design can realize self-flowing unloading of materials, greatly improving loading and unloading efficiency. Compared with flat bottom silos, cone bottom silos realize fully automatic unloading through gravity, which is particularly suitable for the storage of powder and granular materials with good fluidity.

Installation process of cone bottom silo

Structural composition of cone bottom silo

Body structure

Cylinder: Made of Q235B steel plate rolled and welded, the diameter is usually 3-15 meters, and the height is designed according to the capacity requirements

Conical funnel: The inclination angle is ≥45° to ensure that there is no material residue, and it is usually made of 10-16mm thick steel plate

Support frame: It is composed of H-shaped steel or steel pipe columns and needs to pass wind pressure and earthquake resistance calculations

Auxiliary system

Feeding system: There is a dust removal interface and a distributor on the top

Discharging device: The cone bottom is equipped with a pneumatic or manual gate valve, and some models are equipped with a vibration arch breaker

An All facilities: level meter, temperature sensor and explosion-proof pressure relief port

Installation process of cone bottom silo

Standardized installation process (divided into six stages)

Phase 1: Foundation acceptance

Check the concrete foundation strength report (C30 and above)

Use a total station to detect the horizontality of embedded parts (error ≤ 3mm/m²)

Phase 2: Frame assembly

Column hoisting: Use a 25-ton truck crane to correct the verticality of each column (deviation <1/1000 height)

Ring beam welding: Implement segmented symmetrical welding to reduce deformation, and MT flaw detection is required after welding

Phase 3: Warehouse plate installation

Assemble from bottom to top, circle by circle, and control the misalignment of each circle of plates within 1.5mm

Use a torque wrench to tighten high-strength bolts (the final tightening torque must reach the design value ±5%)

Phase 4: Cone assembly

Pre-assemble the cone bucket on the ground, and set up a temporary support frame when hoisting the whole body

The joint between the cone and the cylinder is welded on both sides continuously, and vacuum leak detection is performed

Phase 5: Installation of auxiliary equipment

The installation of the stair platform should comply with GB4053.3 standard

Install a flexible connection sleeve at the interface between the conveying equipment and the silo

Phase 6: Pressure test

Perform 2 4-hour air tightness test (pressure maintained at 0.03MPa)

Load test, graded loading to 120% of design capacity

Installation precautions

Steel plate anti-rust treatment (such as spraying temporary anti-rust primer) is required for construction in rainy season

Preheating measures should be taken when the welding ambient temperature is lower than -5℃

The final acceptance must include a verticality test report issued by a third party

While the structure of a cone bottom silo is engineered for gravity discharge, its role in a processing facility goes much deeper. For a detailed breakdown of how these structures preserve grain quality, read our guide on the .

Conclusion

With the development of modular construction technology, the installation period of modern cone bottom silo has been shortened to 60% of the traditional construction period, but strict compliance with installation specifications is still the key to ensuring the 20-year service life of the equipment.
