Project Overview

Project Overview

A grain storage project in Tanzania was designed for a total maize storage capacity of 1,000 tons, consisting of 2 × 500-ton galvanized steel grain silos.

The project was developed for bulk maize storage, providing the customer with a more organized and controllable solution than traditional bag storage.

Why 2 × 500-Ton Silos?

For a 1,000-ton maize storage requirement, using two 500-ton silos gives the customer greater flexibility in daily operation.

Different maize batches can be stored separately according to harvest time, moisture content, quality, or source. When one silo is being discharged or inspected, the other can continue to serve the storage system.

This configuration also makes future storage management easier compared with putting the entire 1,000 tons into one silo.

Designed for Maize Storage in Tanzania

Tanzania’s warm climate means that maize storage cannot rely only on the silo body. Moisture control, aeration and temperature monitoring are important parts of safe long-term grain storage.

For this reason, a commercial maize silo project should be considered as a complete storage system rather than simply a steel tank. Before loading maize, the grain should be properly dried and cleaned, while the silo should be equipped with suitable aeration and temperature-monitoring arrangements according to the project requirements.

Engineering Focus

From our experience with grain storage projects, the key points for a 500-ton maize silo include:

  • Galvanized steel construction for outdoor installation and corrosion resistance.
  • Aeration system to help control grain temperature during storage.
  • Temperature monitoring to identify abnormal heating inside the grain mass.
  • Proper roof and sealing design to reduce the risk of rainwater entering the silo.
  • Suitable discharge equipment for controlled maize unloading.
  • Flexible silo operation, allowing different maize batches to be managed separately.

Project Result

With 2 × 500-ton maize silos, the Tanzanian customer obtained a 1,000-ton bulk grain storage capacity while maintaining flexibility between the two storage units.

For maize producers, grain traders and agricultural storage facilities in Tanzania, this type of configuration is suitable when the goal is to move from bagged storage toward more efficient bulk maize storage and easier inventory management.
